Traceroute is a utility displays the route and amount of time a message takes throught the interenet between the computer it is run on and the destination computer.  Each time the message gets passed along at a machine inbetween (called a 'hop'), it sends back to the source the address of the hop and the time it took to get to the hop.

Traceroute is useful for determining if there are problems for a particular machine accessing another machine and congestion in the internet along the way.  Unusually high times show congestion and the program will stop if there is a disconnect somewhere between the two machines.
