What Is Ping?

Ping is a utility that sends a packet to a remote destination recording the time it sent the message.  The remote destination then sends back a ping reply and the time the message took to get there and back is displayed to the user known as the 'round-trip time'.  By default, this utility repeats this sequence a number of times to show whether there is any variance in the times.

This utility is usefull to see if there are any disconnects or congestion in the network between the source and destination computers.  If the ping utility returns with 'host unreachable' then there is a misconfiguration in the network.  If the times returned vary widely, it could indicate network congestion or a misconfigured network between the two.
