Basic Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Once you have developed your site, and put it online, there are a few items that you can do without leaving your favorite web development platform. These items will make it easier for the search engines to see your site and get the most out of its contents.
- Make sure you have a Title for each page. It sounds simple, but when developing many pages quickly or pages developed with scripts, it can easily be overlooked. It is important for not only search engines, but for your users as this is what will appear in the browsers title bar.
- Make sure you have a good, unique description meta tag for your pages. Don't simply copy the description meta from the home page to all other pages, make each page's meta description unique and fitting for the contents of the page.
- Ensure that you have a keywords meta tag with keywords that are unique to each page. Again, don't simply copy your home page's meta tags, make them fitting and unique for each page.
- Check all of your links to make sure that there are no broken links. Keep an eye on your website statistics as most will report 404 errors in your site. Fix any errors that are found that entail misspellings, etc in your site.
- Add a XML formatted sitemap that can be submitted to search engines. Follow this link to see a related article on creating sitemap.xml files.
- Create a robots.txt file. Follow this link to see a related article on creating a robots.tx file.
